School Music Programmes and State Events

For most students the school programme is the backbone, and it connects to a statewide structure worth understanding.

The structure

Florida school music runs through district events up to state-level ensembles and assessments organised by the state music education association. Students audition at district level; the strongest are selected for state ensembles that rehearse and perform together at a state conference. Concert bands, orchestras and choruses also take part in music performance assessment, where an ensemble plays for adjudicators and receives ratings.

Why it matters

Selection is a genuine credential, the preparation raises a student's standard sharply, and it puts young players next to the best of their age group in the state — which is usually the moment a student decides how serious they are.

Solo and ensemble

District solo and ensemble events let a student perform a prepared piece for an adjudicator and receive written feedback. It is the least intimidating way to learn to perform under pressure, and the feedback is specific and useful.

Working with the director

Band, orchestra and chorus directors carry very large student loads. The students who get the most from them are the ones who ask specific questions and come prepared. Directors are also the best-informed people locally about teachers, ensembles, scholarships and instrument loans — ask them.

Keeping music through high school

Scheduling pressure squeezes music out for many students. If music matters, plan the timetable years ahead with the school counsellor rather than discovering a clash in the final year.
